Welcome

UMC is dedicated to providing quality, family/patient-centered healthcare services to women from their teens through their childbearing years and beyond, and that’s why we opened the Women’s Pavilion in February of 2012.

UMC’s Women’s Pavilion is El Paso’s first and only Hospital just for women and babies. It features 90 all-private rooms which include spacious antepartum suites for high-risk pregnancies, Labor, Delivery & Recovery suites and postpartum rooms on our Mother/Baby Unit. We also invested in state-of-the-art equipment and technology for our operating rooms and opened a special Women’s Surgical Health Unit for women who have undergone gynecologic surgery. The Women’s Pavilion is the only hospital in the region dedicated exclusively to women’s health. It is staffed by world-class physicians, and specially trained registered nurses. Services include:
  • The most advanced obstetric and gynecologic care in the region
  • Fellowship-trained specialists
  • Board certified obstetricians, anesthesiologists and neonatologists on-site 24/7
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios that allow for individualized patient care
  • A unique Certified Nurse Midwifery program
  • VBAC- vaginal birth after a Cesarean section
  • Family/Patient Centered Care which increases family satisfaction and comfort
UMC is affiliated with the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, which allows around-the-clock care by physician specialists who are highly-trained and in-house 24/7. A cadre of private practice physicians also practice medicine on the UMC/Texas Tech campus. We are committed to providing the highest level of care to women and newborns and we pride ourselves in following the Family/Patient-Centered Care Model. This care model encourages patient and family involvement in the delivery process, opens lines of communication between healthcare providers and patients, and creates learning opportunities, all of which are proven to lead to good outcomes and family satisfaction. Our patients’ healthcare is our number one priority. Our Family/ Patient-Centered Care Model allows our healthcare team to create a close relationship with each patient and their family, all of whom are involved in their healthcare treatment decisions.

Mother/Baby Unit

After mother delivers baby, the family is transitioned to UMC’s Mother/Baby unit (postpartum suite), located in the medical center’s Women's Pavilion, which features 30 all-private postpartum suites providing comfort, convenience and the utmost privacy. Mother and baby are transitioned together and cared for in the same suite, a family centered approach that we call Mother-Baby Couplet Care. Our unique affiliations help us to provide quality healthcare for mothers and babies at all times. We have teamed-up with the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Paul L. Foster School of Medicine and private practice physicians/subspecialists to ensure that the physician you need is available to work with our highly trained staff around-the-clock. That partnership also helps to ensure that we practice the most up-to-date, evidence-based healthcare.

Meet April, a real mom who experienced Mother-Baby Couplet Care at UMC. She explains the type of care that she received and how she experienced immediate bonding with her baby, skin-to-skin care and breastfeeding support.
Healthy newborns are usually cared for in mom’s room and stay with mom for the full length of mom and baby’s hospital stay, but sometimes a higher level of care is needed. That’s why we are affiliated with the many specialists at El Paso Children’s Hospital (EPCH). Located right upstairs, El Paso Children’s Hospital has the highest level of Neonatal Intensive Care services available and is staffed 24/7 by a Board Certified neonatologists. The nurseries at EPCH include: the Intermediate Care Nursery, for infants that require added support; the Intensive Care Nursery for infants that are critically ill; and the Continuing Care Nursery for infants transitioning from the hospital to their home

Breast Feeding Support
The Texas Department of State Health Services has officially designated University Medical Center of El Paso as a Texas 10 Step Program facility. Texas 10 Step facilities are hospitals and birthing centers that are recognized for the support and promotion of breastfeeding through policy development, maternity care practices and resources for breastfeeding mothers. The program, developed by Texas Department of State Health Services, requires breastfeeding training for all facility staff and outlines specific steps to ensure breastfeeding support. The Texas Medical Association endorses the Texas 10 Step Program as a method to improve maternity care practices surrounding breastfeeding and as a springboard to becoming a Baby-Friendly Hospital. To learn more about the Texas 10 Step program and the impact designated facilities are having on the health of newborns, click here.

All of our RNs have at least 20-hours of lactation-training and are available to offer breastfeeding support to patients. Additionally, we have 10 CLC and 11 IBCLC trained Lactation Consultants who have undergone even more detailed and rigorous training so they can assist with any challenges a mother might be facing with breastfeeding. They also offer educational support to help ensure that patients succeed. Our vision is for all babies to receive skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth and receive breast milk for first feed. For questions or to make an appointment with a lactation consultant after discharge, call UMC's Women's Health Center at 915-532-5454.

State-of-the-art Infant Security System

Along with patient care, patient safety and security are on top of UMC’s priority list. We have security measures in place to ensure the safety of all patients and their loved ones. We have video cameras in place that are always monitored to ensure mom and baby are safe and never separated. We also have implemented the hugs and kisses infant security system that supplies each mother and baby with matching security bracelets that are programmed and closely monitored to reduce the risk of infant abduction.

Visitors
UMC encourages visitation, but sometimes, scheduled visiting hours may have to be altered due to the condition of the patient and/or personal requests from the patient and family. Please note that visiting restrictions are for the safety of the mothers and babies on the unit.

After You & Baby Get Home

There is a lot of information to take in during your hospital stay, but our team of professionals wants to make sure that your transition home is as seamless as possible. Our nursing staff will provide you with educational and resource materials that will help answer some of your questions about caring for yourself and baby after delivery. A UMC Associate also will call you after you return home to check on you and baby and to ask if you have any further questions. Although we offer a lot of educational support during your hospital stay, there may still be some things that you are unsure of. One especially important thing to know is the dangers of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). It is important to keep your newborn comfortable, but bear in mind that more than 400 Texas babies die in their sleep each year, either from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or accidental suffocation or strangulation. Imagine the grief and guilt those babies’ parents must feel especially since deaths of that nature are very preventable.

To help spread the word, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services has launched a campaign to educate new parents on how best to care for their child at bedtime. It’s called “Room to Breathe.” It features a woman whose child never woke up from a nap. She tells her story in this video. The campaign’s focus is the ABCs of infant sleep.
A: Babies should sleep alone, never with their parents or siblings
B: On their back with no blankets, bedding, bumper pads or stuffed animals
C: In a crib and cool (70 degrees max)
S: In a smoke free environment
